The Art of Being Brilliant
Andy Cope BSc, MA, PGCE, MCMI
Andy describes himself as ‘a professional trainer, qualified teacher, author and learning junkie,’ and he sets the tone of the Conference with a message for anyone who has a passion to make the most of themselves in a ‘manic society’ where most people's lives are on permanent fast-forward, their work is probably being re-structured and their budget cut. Customer expectations are rising. You are probably going to be audited or inspected one day soon. And then there are family pressures. And society. And the traffic. And the ‘credit crunch'. Oh, and don't forget the weather! ‘The Art of Being Brilliant' provides an antidote to the crazy world that is 2010. This workshop uses concepts of Emotional Intelligence and Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) to explore how you can be you, brilliantly.

Before the hearing aid fitting - What tests help to optimise the fitting?
Professor H Gustav Mueller PhD, Professor of Audiology, Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee, USA
There are probably ten or more different tests that could be conducted prior to the hearing aid fitting which have the potential of optimising the programming, assisting with counselling, and predicting benefit and satisfaction. Speech tests? Loudness tests? Annoyance tests? Personality tests? Patient Expectations? All sound good. However, as Josiah Franklin from Ecton, Northamptonshire taught his son Benjamin in the early 1700s, "Time is Money"! You can't do them all. So which ones provide the most useful information? That’s what we’ll discuss in this seminar.

The mystery of audiometry
Robert Rendall, BSc, MSc, Dip.Post-Comp. Ed., MIOA, FSHAA.
The pure-tone audiogram remains the most important test you'll undertake on a patient. The purpose of a recommended procedure is to describe the best way to "do it", and for audiometry adherence to the recommended procedure will get you reliable results whilst minimising errors, patient stress and time. The British Society of Audiology's Profession Practice Committee (formerly known as the BSA Education Committee) is currently reviewing the recommended procedure in an attempt to remove ambiguities and incomprehensible phrases, and to define those occasions where you'd do better to deviate (a little) from the usual practice in order to get true results. This presentation will illustrate some of the changes being suggested"

Making your children eat their greens
Marc Hogan
Whether you are conscious of it or not, we all sell everyday. Some of us are paid to sell a product or service to our customers; others need to present our ideas to the Board, ask for a pay rise, or even try to convince our children to eat their greens. No one likes to be “sold to” and God forbid that somebody tries to “close” us. So, what if, rather than your customer being “sold to” you could solve their problems for a fair and reasonable fee? Marc’s 5 step S.A.L.E.S. system will not only inspire your team, improve their communication skills and increase their sales. It will also ensure that they and their customers enjoy the process a whole lot more!
17.00 – 17.45
Open-Canal Fittings - Perspectives on selection and verification
Professor H Gustav Mueller PhD, Professor of Audiology, Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee, USA
Just as Boddingtons is considered the “Cream of Manchester”, most dispensers believe that open-canal fittings are the "Cream of Hearing Aids"! In the past five years, this hearing aid style has grown tremendously in popularity and changed the way we think about amplification. But . . . there are still a few questions to be answered. This seminar will address such topics as reasonable fitting ranges, prescriptive selection approaches and verification techniques. We'll also discuss how special features such as noise reduction and directional technology interact with this hearing aid style.

Life is a constant readjustment to our surroundings: How the auditory brain adapts to change
Kevin J Munro, School of Psychological Sciences, University of Manchester
Previous research has shown that loudness perception is modified in adult listeners after a period of sensory deprivation or stimulation. However, it is not known if the auditory system undergoes physiological changes or if listeners simply recalibrate their behavioural criteria such that they become more, or less, conservative following sensory deprivation and stimulation, respectively. The results of this study, comparing threshold of the middle ear acoustic reflex in the two ears of adult listeners after use of a unilateral earplug, are consistent with adaptive plasticity. Acoustic reflexes were measured at a lower sound pressure level in the ear that had been plugged for 7 days. Thus, the effect is consistent with a central gain mechanism and this may explain the mechanism of tinnitus and hyperacusis as well as appropriate management options.
11.50 – 12.40
Hearing restorative procedure - what have I learnt in the last 25 years
Mr Matthew Yung, Consultant ENT Surgeon, Ipswich
The surgical treatments of hearing impairment include hearing restoration and hearing rehabilitation. This presentation concerns mainly with surgical restoration of hearing. In the last 25 years, there has been a better understanding of the bio-mechanics of the middle ear. Technological developments have lead to the development of numerous ossicular prostheses. The author will give an appraisal on some of these prostheses to see if the results of hearing restoration have improved in the last 25 years. He will also examine the limiting factors in the long-term success of ossiculoplasty. Hopefully this will lead to better patient selection in deciding which patients will benefit from surgical restoration and which will benefit from hearing rehabilitation using hearing aids.
