Starting a Career in Hearing Aid Dispensing

A Hearing Aid Dispenser practising in the private sector must have passed either a Foundation degree in Audiology at a university approved by HPC or passed the Hearing Aid Council examinations and completed 850 hours of post exam training before they can dispense hearing aids. HPC aptitude test    The HPC’s new aptitude test will allow those with relevant qualifications and work experience to join the HPC register as hearing aid dispensers.  The test is primarily aimed at those currently dispensing in the NHS or abroad and who wish to work in the private sector.  Information will be published on the HPC website (link above) explaining how to apply for the test and what it involves.  The test is being organised by De Montfort University and Anglia Ruskin University.  They expect to run the test quarterly, depending on demand, and it will be recognised by the HPC. 

 

Foundation Degree in Hearing Aid Audiology

 

Anglia Ruskin Univiersity

Their 20-month course allows successful graduates entry on to the Health Professions Council Register. The course comprises blended flexible learning – utilising a combination of distance learning, work based learning and residential courses held on the ARU Cambridge campus.

As well as being the route for new students to become qualified Hearing Aid Audiologists, this course is suitable for RHADs who wish to develop their knowledge and skills whilst gaining an academic qualification – the FdSc. All RHADs have been accredited with a minimum of 90 credits towards the 240 needed to gain the FdSc. In addition, extra credit is given for experience of more than 1, 2 and 5 years.    RHADs who have 5 years experience will be accredited with a total of 150 credits towards the 240 needed – meaning they will have to study just 4 modules to gain their Foundation Degree.

De Montfort University, in Leicester, 

 

Offers a range of programmes to meet the wide educational and vocational needs of staff in the NHS and Independent sectors. They have a range of programmes for trainees, registered Audiologists and Hearing Aid Audiologists including a Foundation Degree to taught Professional Doctorate. All the audiology programmes make use of experienced academic and clinical lecturers, including specialists working in the NHS and Independent Sector.

 

 

Aston Univeristy, Birmingham

 

The Foundation Degree in Hearing Aid Audiology at Aston University in Birmingham, was the first programme to be approved by the HAC.  Since then they have seen two student cohorts successfully graduate.  The programme uses a blended learning approach in which students are on campus for a total of 14 weeks out of the two academic years.  During this time students are taught using a range of approaches including traditional lectures, workshops, e-learning resources and have access to our leading skills laboratory.
